Like most arbitrary genre definitions, the lines between math, dance and indie rock (particularly the first two) are so wildly distorted that they serve as little more than vague signposts – especially when a band ‘fits’, as much as one can, in all three categories. Enter Colaars, a Ukrainian four-piece who – genres aside – have a sound pleasantly reminiscent of an upbeat, Antidotes-era Foals, albeit with less discernible lyrics. Their debut EP – Wood Arsenal – bursts into life with The Youth; introducing the band’s bright guitar lines, frantic staccato drumming, flowing bass and cacophonous vocals in quick succession; elements which feature prominently throughout all five tracks. Admittedly, the record does take a more sombre minor-key turn for Black Fox which – at a shade over four minutes – is the longest offering to be had. The change of tone shows off a bit of versatility on the band’s part, and certainly keeps things, at least from an instrumental perspective, from becoming overly monotonous. The vocals however, by their half-shouted and largely indistinct nature, do feel repetitive and represent the weakest element of the release.
