Cook Thugless’s latest release, “Vacation Blend II,” is a venture into something newer still: an attempt to document their live sound on a record. Recorded on a 5-day excursion into the woods of rural Pennsylvania, Vacation Blend II acts as both a literal and metaphorical retreat from the typical goings-on of the band. Both rappers break from their traditional medium to sing sweet melodies over chilled-out R&B tunes played by the band. The album also has a jazzy flavor, featuring some horn solos between verses, as well as a cover of jazz singer Gregory Porter’s tune “In Fashion.” During their time huddled in the humble cabin, the microphones were never off, allowing the album to be sprinkled with short, audio candids of the group off the clock.
