The Devil Plays Poker began as a songwriting project by CT native Christoph Whitbeck completed between 2007 and 2009. It evolved into a 17-song rock opera depicting a brief and tragic struggle of our protagonist, the nameless"Card Player" who, down on his luck, opts in to the wrong hand of poker. The story is sung from the perspective of the characters involved - the Card Player (Michael Walker) his Mother (Mysti Keller), his Fiancée (Jackie Meeker), a local gambling-addicted Vagrant (Peter Cunningham), and even the Devil himself (Christoph Whitbeck).The performance, which premiered at New Haven's Lyric Hall on Halloween 2013, and the album are intended to be experienced front-to-back. This cohesive storytelling unit showcases the amazing musicianship of CT locals Jake Habegger (Drums) and D'Andre Fontanelle (Bass) as well as Derek"D-Rock" Currier (Saxophone). The album was then recorded by Peter Recine at Greenpoint studios over one marathon weekend in November 2013 at a house in Christoph's hometown, with an emphasis toward emulating the visceral live performance.So get a glass of whiskey, pick your best damn headphones, or go windows-down/system-up and enjoy this masterpiece of true rock and roll.
