Homemade Bread is a RVA based band led by bassist, guitarist, and singer, Mike Laroche and drummer/percussionist Geoff Bakel. Originally formed in early 2000, the band has reunited in 2014, with fresh music and a live band that has redefined their sound. With the bands new full length album release, Echo, Homemade Bread is storming onto the scene with a new brand of music blending funk and folk. The album features other stand out native Richmonders, including original members Dave McAloon on guitar, and saxophonist Jason Gay. Newly added to the mix where trumpeters Mike Davison and Mark Ingraham. The album features 13 original tunes that showcase a myriad of sides to this multidimensional group. Laroche's singing throughout the album is expressive and embodies a passion that bellows through with fervent sound and words. The predominant composer for the album, Laroche's dexterity on both acoustic and electric bass, as well as acoustic and electric guitars permeates in a balanced harmony throughout. Co-composer and lyricist Geoff Bakel's rhythmic contributions for each track serve as the catalyst that push the music beyond. From funk laden pocket grooves to Afro-Caribbean flavors and American inspired beats, the percussive deliveries help etch a deeper commentary on Echo. In addition to these attributes, it is clear that the sax work delivered by Gay, especially on Prana, Ingraham's trumpet blowing on Untie You, and McAloon's additional guitar contributions throughout give the album a deeper sense of human feel and musical depth.
