Experimental collaboration is the name of the game for Cook Thugless, the do-it-yourself rap group from New Brunswick, NJ.It’s hard to pin down exactly what Cook Thugless sounds like. Do they draw on the sonic palettes of Alt-J, Flying Lotus, and Gorillaz? Sure. But that doesn’t mean they don’t also enjoy layering 15 saxophone solos on top of one another, making a rapper gargle into a microphone, or leading listeners through a whole album with the help of an omniscient narrator. Some might say the group sounds like a feral cat trying to make its way out of a burlap sack, or perhaps a corn refinery which has been set on fire by a serial arsonist. Cook Thugless wouldn’t disagree.
