This song is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever created. We (Ann Scott, Cal Scott & Valerie Brown) made a live recording of it during a performance at Arbuckle Flat Coffeehouse in Portland, Oregon in about 1973. The haunting, evocative lyrics by Richard Farina have so much power that voices alone can carry the song. The lyrics are also more appropriate today than when we first performed the song, expressing the heartbreak of ecological disaster yet offering a slender surviving bond with the natural world. Our version was a cappella, and we routinely brought whole rooms of drinkers in Portland pubs to a standstill with our performance. Our band was called Moonstone and included Chris Brandt, Dan Brandt, and Pete Dyrhaug.
