I thought I'd try Fjord because it's drawn favorable comparisons with the likes of Ulver's Kveldssanger, Vàli, and October Falls. Unfortunately such comparisons are rather misplaced at this point. What is showcased here is not a mature, intimate knowledge of acoustic folk music, the tracks do not weave and blend together as would then be expected. Instead it seems to be practice sessions from someone learning how to play guitar like those artists. Every track sounds entirely separate and as if a myriad of ideas were just thrown together, hoping to gain coherence in the process. Either the guy is new to acoustic guitar, he has limited compositional ability, or maybe both.Time will tell. I'll give it a break and a 3/5 because this appears to be the first demo. Also I have the impression that Fjord is capable of producing much better music in the future, it's a question of whether or not he will find the inspiration. There's some way to go before Fjord earns the company of Vàli, in my book.
