Lead singer Graham Langley was the focal point, it's his voice that threatened cloying disaster in the awful opening bars of"A Trained Dog," but there was a sense of restraint about him that kept the potential self-importance of the album at a minimum. If the Tindersticks stripped down to a four-piece and single notes, or JJ72 and Godspeed You Black Emperor! kept the electrics unplugged, they might have sounded like this. A shuffled and sometimes tedious LP, but not totally negligible.
